Research Leadership
Prof. Richard J. Harvey leads the Rhinology & Skull Base program at UNSW’s Applied Medical Research Centre and holds conjoint professorial appointments at both the University of New South Wales and Macquarie University. He practices as a dedicated rhinologist at St Vincent’s and Macquarie University Hospitals, and his clinical caseload directly informs and is informed by the group’s research agenda. His H-index exceeds 66, and he has been ranked the top Australian researcher in otolaryngology for seven consecutive years.

The Group
Our research integrates rhinology, skull base surgery, neurosurgery, pathology, endocrinology, and respiratory medicine — a genuinely multidisciplinary team united by a shared commitment to generating evidence that changes clinical practice.

Training the Next Generation
The group has directed the Sydney Rhinology Fellowship since 2009 — an internationally competitive post-training program that has hosted fellows from New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Canada, Israel, the United States, Brazil, and Switzerland, among others.
The Sydney Observer Program extends this further — offering visiting surgeons the opportunity to spend time embedded in a research-active rhinology practice. More than fifty surgeons from around the world have participated over the past two years.
The group supervises PhD and Masters candidates through UNSW and Macquarie University, and runs a regular series of surgical skills courses in Sydney each year.
